Checkers or Wreckers: James’ Race for the Title

May 1st, 2009

It all comes down to this Saturday night in Las Vegas. The blood, the sweat, the tears, the season, the title. It’ll all be decided in the final 20 laps of the Supercross Series, where James Stewart holds a slim 6-point lead over Chad Reed.

The two racers have battled tooth and nail all season (check this for a history of the rivalry), and there will be no love lost between them come tomorrow night. In fact, the drama already started to unfold at the pre-race press conference. Reed used the opportunity to talk about the atmosphere going into the final race: “It’s checkers or wreckers.”

That pretty much sums it up–it’s all on the line and whoever drops the hammer and delivers in Vegas is going to be crowned the 2009 AMA Supercross Champion.

So tune in to Speed TV at 7 pm PST to catch all the action live, or watch CBS’ rebroadcast at 10 am PST Sunday morning.

May the best man win. And, check out the below video to get a look at one of the best guys in the biz.

Surfers Go Off on Day 3 of Lowers Pro

April 30th, 2009

Intensity escalated for Round 3 of the WQS 6-Star PRIME 6.0 Lowers Pro today when the event’s top performers showcased spectacular surfing in the best conditions of the event. The two-to-four foot surf on offer also hosted the opening round of the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge U.S.A Qualifier.

Nat Young continued to dominate the righthand walls of Lower Trestles on his backhand today, unleashing the day’s highest single wave score of 6.0 Lowers Pro competition, a near-perfect 9.57 out of 10. Young needed a nine-point-ride to advance through his Round 3 heat and earned the score in the dying minutes to progress through to Round 4.

“I pretty much had counted myself out of the heat by then,” Young said. “Once I saw that wave I knew it was going to be a good right and I just surfed it. Toward the end I was thinking, I could actually get the score!”

The impressive result by the Santa Cruz talent will earn him the most points of his career on the ASP WQS, significantly helping his seed on the The Grind. Young will now enter into the three-man heat format utilized in ASP 6-Star PRIME competition and will face a stacked heat against current ASP World Tour No. 5 C.J. Hobgood, who won the event in 2002 and 2007, and ASP World Tour sophomore Dane Reynolds tomorrow.

“I think this is the most points I’ve ever gotten, so I’m stoked,” Young said. “Plus, next heat is only a three-man heat, so it’s one less person in the water out at Lowers. If I get through that heat I’ll be stoked.”

Dusty Payne showed why he is considered by several of his peers to be one of the most progressive surfers on the planet when he dropped an 8.33 out of 10 with only two maneuvers. The Lahaina local blasted a radical tail-drifting first turn and followed up with a massive frontside air-reverse on a closeout section to earn the score, eventually allowing him to convincingly win his heat.

“The wave didn’t offer a whole lot, so it was either go for it or get a 3-point-score,” Payne said. “That’s what I had to do to make it through the heat because there are not a lot of waves and hopefully you come up on top.”

2008 was Payne’s final year in the ASP Pro Junior Series, and a third-place finish in last year’s Oakley Pro Junior U.S. Qualifier at Trestles earned him a wildcard spot in the inaugural Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge in Bali where in claimed the title and $20,000 check. The young Hawaiian is having a successful campaign on the ASP WQS this year, currently rated 16th overall, and taking his quest for qualification for the ASP Dream Tour in stride.

“I’m just going event-by-event and am going to see where I am halfway through the year,” Payne said. “If I’m in the top 16 at the halfway point in the year, I’m definitely going to make a push to qualify. It’s my dream to be on the World Tour, so we’ll see how the year goes.”

Tomorrow’s action will see the 6.0 Lowers Pro complete Rounds 4 and 5 before it returns to Oakley Pro Junior competition. Round 4 will kick off the day with an all-Hawaiian heat including ASP World Tour surfer Fred Patacchia, Dusty Payne and Evan Valiere.

BMX Gets Sick With It

April 30th, 2009

Sure, Nike 6.0’s BMX riders Mike Spinner and Nigel Sylvester got some serious hops, but lately these guys have been getting more air time than Anderson Cooper. That’s right, these two are showing up everywhere from magazine ads to late night talk shows, viral online videos and more.

Tech wizard, Mike Spinner, went huge last week with a feature article on ESPN.com and an appearance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” After cruising around NYC for the day with the ESPN crew, Spinner headed off for an interview with Jimmy Fallon. Spinner made his studio entrance by hitting an on-stage jump box, from a giant roll-in…. How else would he do it in front of 2 million viewers?!!!

Likewise, Nigel Sylvester has been getting sick with it everywhere we look. FUEL TV recently caught up with Nigel on the “Encounter.” In one of the sickest vids we’ve seen in a while, Nigel slays a ledge set-up, in the middle of nowhere…literally. Also dope is the double double page ad Nigel’s got in this month’s issue of Ride BMX, peep it.

Michel Lights Up Lowers

April 29th, 2009

The ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME 6.0 Lowers Pro saw the opening day of America’s first ASP 6-Star PRIME event end in dramatic fashion when ASP World Tour rookie and Nike 6.0 rider Michel Bourez (Toahotu, PYF), 23, delivered the day’s highest scores in the second-to-last heat. The 6.0 Lowers Pro’s ASP 6-Star PRIME status offers the maximum amount of points available for an ASP WQS even and a $145,000 prize purse, making the prestigious contest a significant stop on all competitors’ calendars in their quest toward qualification for the coveted ASP World Tour.   Bourez crushed the day’s highest single wave score when he annihilated an amazing Lowers lefthander, blasting several backside turns and earning a near-perfect 9.77 out of 10. The talented Tahitian then capitalized on a beautiful righthand wall and went ballistic on his forehand, earning another nine-point ride for the day’s highest heat total of 18.77 out of 20.

“That left came from nowhere,” Bourez said. “There were no waves in my heat and there was the first wave and the biggest set had came and all of the guys were paddling for it and I let it go. Just behind it was that sick left.”

Michel had never surfed Lower Trestles before, but it’s safe to say he didn’t let that stand in his way. We’re looking forward to more stunning surfing from Michel and the rest of the 6.0 team.

Surf’s Up

April 28th, 2009

It’s been a frigid winter, but the surf team wouldn’t know anything about it. Hotter than
Megan Fox riding a golden chariot to the sun, pulled by the Swedish bikini team…the 6.0 crew continues scorching its way toward summer.

Recently, Dusty “Big Money” Payne took a huge bite out of the 2009 Kustom Air Strike, winning the title and claiming a $50,000 purse. Slated as the “world’s richest single-maneuver surfing competition,” the Air Strike was jam packed with video submissions from the best aerial specialists in the biz, including Clay Marzo, Rat Boy and Jay Davies. It was D. Payne, however, who literally walked away with a jacket made of money, after filming a massive aerial reverse, his signature move.

At the same time, 6.0 whiz kid, Evan Geiselman won his 13th NSSA East Coast Championship at Sebastian Inlet, FL. Having already broken the NSSA record with 12 titles, the 13th simply makes as a nice buffer for any future shredders that may try to break Evan’s lofty feat.

All of this leads right into the 6.0 Lowers Pro, which kicked-off this morning at Trestles. So don’t just sit there staring at the screen, hop on over to nike6lowerspro.com and check out the live webcast, where you can follow the first WQS 6-Star Prime in the US as it happens.
