Aussie’s Sweep at Pier Pressure
2008 Pier Pressure Highlights from gabe folick on Vimeo.
Huntington Beach was typical Huntington last weekend, as the 4 star Nike 6.0 Pier Pressure event went down in wind-blown conditions. The waves were waist-chest high, and the beach was hustling with action. There was a dude with an albino snake watching the comp, the world champ sandcastle builder creating a wave machine, and plenty of crazed beach attire.
The competition was stacked, with standout Aussie Julian Wilson cleaning house every heat, proceeding to win one of the highest rated Jr. Pro events of the season.
Fellow countryman, Stuart Kennedy turned some heads, landing on the podium in 2nd place. Local hero, Andrew Doheny made the west coast proud with a 3rd place. There’s definetly a reason to throw a shrimp on the Barbie, for the Aussies.
Besides the action in the water, the athlete tent had all sorts going on. Nike had an i.D booth set up for athletes, where you can build custom shoes, choosing the style, materials, and colors. Pretty dope. Check out Koa designing a pair.
Nalus, the best Hawaiian grub on the mainland, catered the event for athletes and staff, serving up some amazing marinated Mahi Mahi. For dessert, the snowcone machine was in 5th gear all afternoon stoking out the crowds and turning mouths blue.
Nike 6.0 hosted a live webcast for the event. Koa Smith and Monyca Byrne-Wickey commentated a few heats.
Another special guest showed up, Matt Skiba from the punk band Alkaline Trio, who just finished a live, acoustic set at Jack’s Surf Shop, giving super-fans a little something special and promoting their collaborative shoe with Nike 6.0, the Heart and Sole.
Over and out Huntington Beach. Check out the slideshow from the event below.
